With 700 ideas submitted there was of course some duplication, and some of the ideas reflected retailing fundamentals. So here we are highlighting ideas that we consider practical and implementable in store but that go beyond the basics, to give you some inspiration for what you could be doing a bit differently to help grow your business and its role in the community

An important word of advice, though, from one contributor:

“Don’t get burned by too many ideas,
remember the basics.”

We couldn’t agree more! Don’t feel like you have to implement all of these, all at once. Some won’t be right for your store and your shoppers; you know best! But perhaps one or two of them might spark a new initiative or a change to your usual practices which could lead to great things. And talking of basics? A key theme which came across in entries was the importance of working with supplier representatives, particularly when it comes to merchandising, display and range selection. Range and Display

Display and ranging are critical to success in convenience retail. Display needs to help shoppers find what they are looking for while it can also inspire and help drive incremental purchases. The former is all about getting the basics right. However, there are fewer rules on how to create inspiration in store, so there is opportunity to be really creative and be different in order to stand out and encourage additional sales.

Customer Service

Have a suggestion box to get feedback directly from your shoppers. Have some cards and pens always out to make it easy for the customer. If someone says something at the till or to staff you can then suggest they write it down
